Akari is not just your ordinary Oriental restaurant. Dealing basically in Japanese cuisine, Akari is an Izakaya, “a type of Japanese drinking establishment which also serves food to accompany the drinks”. This curious mix has lent it an equally curious reputation: patrons and critics alike are pleasantly surprised with its keeping the onus on drinks and having food as a sideline. Akari is open from Tuesdays to Fridays from 5:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M. and on Saturdays to Sundays from 12:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M.

I had a roommate who'd been living in Japan for two years and told me all about Izakaya (which, under the description here is noted as a drinking establishment that offers food to accompany the drinks). The concept of food as ancillary to eats isn't my favorite, but this place is smart and relaxed and tasty. Try the Pork Katsu (8.30), deep fried pork loin in breadcrumbs served with bangbang-zi sauce and mustard.

This is not just a place to eat. I specially liked the idea of serving drink based Japanese food. It was a unique experience in itself. They have a wide variety of food and drinks to offer, definitely worth a visit.
