With a web service and an application developed for iPhone and Android, Tellmewhere.com leads the way in geolocalization services in France. Based on algorithms of each user’s previous recommendations, Tellmewhere offers a service that allows one to discover new places in the city: restaurants, shops, museums and more. Since Tellmewhere’s beginnings in 2007, more than 900,000 users have posted over 1,000,000 reviews of places they have visited.
Tellmewhere is not simply a recommendation site on the Internet. Tellmewhere has a system that analyzes users' tastes and makes recommendations based on existing user favorites and the favorites of their friends. Users can also invite their friends to see their favorite locations and to post reviews. With 300,000 worldwide addresses registered, Tellmewhere offers a rich and relevant local database.
The Tellmewhere application is available on iPhone and Android smartphones. Once downloaded, the application uses the integrated GPS of a mobile to determine the user position. After selecting the search category (e.g. Restaurants, Shopping, Museums, etc), Tellmewhere will recommend the most compatible places closest to the user. Once the user has selected the address, the user may request the best route to travel (through Google Maps), and once their visit is done, they can post a review.
Constantly evolving, Tellmewhere adopts the latest technology: for example, the application is available on iPad tablets, the Google Voice feature on Android allows the user to search by voice, and the feature “Ask a friend” connects the user to Facebook.
The Business Model offers users promotional coupons on behalf of the business listed on the site (restaurants, hotels, stores, brands). This approach benefits both the Tellmewhere user by providing them with special offers, and the local companies by promoting their products and services. So far, more than 2,000 merchant accounts have been created.
Tellmewhere is working with brands to advance them in a mobile context and offer location-based games (e.g. treasure hunt, urban games, and more) to the user community.
